A two-minute self-test

  1. Open your resume PDF and select all the text (Ctrl or Cmd + A), then copy it.
  2. Paste it into a plain text editor.
  3. Check that the order makes sense, nothing is missing and dates stay next to the right jobs.

If the pasted text is jumbled or missing, an ATS will probably see the same thing. The AI resume analyzer can also review a resume and explain what to fix.

Keywords still matter

Layout only gets your resume read correctly. Content gets it found. Mirror the exact terms from the job post, such as the tools, certifications and job titles it mentions, when they truly apply to you. See resume keywords for tech jobs or our explanation of how an ATS works.

Frequently asked questions

Is a PDF or Word file better for ATS?

Most modern systems read both. A PDF with selectable text keeps your formatting consistent. Avoid PDFs that are scanned images. If a posting asks for a specific format, follow it.

Do ATS reject resumes automatically?

Usually the system parses and ranks or filters according to recruiter settings. A resume that parses badly can lose out, which is why clean formatting matters.

Can I still use color?

Light use is fine, for example in headings. Keep text dark and readable, and don't rely on color to carry meaning.
